The pin buckle is a frame with a hinged tongue. The single prong is the default of dress and casual belts, and of most size charts and punching setups. The double prong runs two tongues through two holes in a heavier frame, spreading load; it belongs to work, western and heavy straps.

Roller Buckles

A roller buckle replaces the fixed bar of a pin frame with a rotating roller, so the strap travels over it as the belt tightens — less friction, less abrasion, which is why it is the classic of wide, heavy work belts. The approval points are all in the motion: the roller must spin freely without lateral play, carry no seam or flat spot that stamps the strap, and its finish must survive being a moving part — a plating spec that passes on a static buckle can wear differently where the strap runs over it.

Plate Buckles

A plate buckle puts the design on a flat, decorated plate — engraved, embossed, logo-bearing — with the working closure hidden behind it. On western and fashion programs the plate is the product and the strap is its mount. The attachment behind the plate (hidden prong, screws or rivets) carries the entire load of the belt and needs a pull-strength check, not just a visual.

A reversible belt is two belts sharing one strap: the buckle pivots on a center loop to flip to the second color or finish. The pivot is the mechanism — it must hold firmly enough to be worn yet flip deliberately, thousands of times. Approve the four combinations it ships as: buckle face A with strap face A, A with B, B with A, B with B. Check logo orientation on both faces; a mark that reads correctly on one side can arrive upside down on the other.

The D-ring is the oldest closure logic here: thread the strap through one or two rings, and the strap’s own tail locks it by friction. No holes, no mechanism — the natural partner for webbing, canvas, elastic and softer leathers, and a poor one for stiff finished straps that slide instead of gripping. That material dependence is the approval story: ring gauge against strap thickness, the weld seam under load, and a slip check on the actual strap material. Friction closures fail by slow drift, and the strap surface, not the ring, decides when.

Clip and Clamp Buckles

A clip head grips the strap end directly — a spring-loaded bite or a set-screw clamp — for one-handed, no-holes adjustment on webbing, elastic and casual programs. Surface Finishes: The Second Half of Hardware Approval

Finish is not decoration added after the engineering. The same buckle geometry ages differently in polished versus antique plate — in the store, on the waistband, inside the carton — and the finish decides which parts of the approval list matter most.
